The True Cost of Manufacturing a Supplement (Full Breakdown, No Hidden Fees)
A quoted unit price is not your cost. By the time a bottle is sellable it carries the active, the packaging, the testing, the artwork, the freight and the duty — and most first-time buyers only discover half of these after the purchase order is signed. Here is every line item that belongs in your model, and the ones suppliers tend to leave out.

The Costs Inside the Quotation
- What does a typical unit price include?
The active ingredients, the excipients, the primary packaging, the filling and the labour — that is, the factory’s material and conversion cost for one finished unit. It does not automatically include tooling, testing, artwork or freight unless stated. - How big is the active-ingredient share?
For commodity actives it can be a small fraction. For premium or high-dose actives — collagen, NMN, branded ingredients — it dominates the cost, and it is the line most exposed to spot-price movement. Ask what the price is based on and how long it is held. - Why do two suppliers quote different prices for the same formula?
Different active sourcing, different fill weight tolerance, different packaging grade, and different overhead. A lower quote often means a cheaper actives source, a lighter fill or a thinner pack — not a more efficient factory. - What is a fill-weight tolerance and why does it matter?
Regulations allow the actual fill to sit within a band around the declared weight. Consistently running at the bottom of that band is legal and reduces cost, but it may show in the customer’s experience. Ask what tolerance the factory targets.
The Costs Outside the Quotation
- What tooling and plate charges should I expect?
If you want custom moulds, a printed carton, or a bespoke bottle, there are one-off tooling or print setup costs. These are not in the unit price and are usually charged on the first order only. Ask explicitly. - What does third-party testing cost?
Testing for potency, heavy metals, microbial contamination and sometimes residual solvents is charged per batch, not per unit. It is a fixed cost that becomes cheaper per unit as your batch size grows. - What does artwork and proofing involve?
Label design, regulatory text drafting, and print proofing. Some factories include basic artwork setup; complex structural design is usually charged. Get the artwork scope in writing before design starts. - How much is freight and who arranges it?
Freight depends on mode (air, LCL, FCL), season and destination. It is normally arranged by the buyer or by the factory on the buyer’s account. Always ask for the incoterm — FOB, CIF or DDP — because it changes who owns risk and cost. - What about duty and import charges?
These depend on your country, your HS code and your ingredient profile. In the EU and the US, supplement imports carry duty plus, in some cases, VAT or sales tax at entry. Budget for them; a supplier cannot quote them reliably for you.
The Costs Buyers Forget
- What is the cost of a reprint?
If a claim on your label is non-compliant, or your artwork has an error, you may need to reprint every label and every carton. This is the single most avoidable large cost in the project — and it is avoided by a regulatory review before print. - What is the cost of a delay?
A late batch can mean missed launch, missed retail windows and, on marketplaces, lost ranking. It also means your capital is idle. Ask what the production timeline is measured from and how it is protected. - What is the cost of over-ordering?
Storage, insurance, and the shelf-life clock. Stock that sits is stock that cannot be sold at full price. Model your sell-through honestly before you commit to volume. - What is the cost of a failed stability test?
A reformulation and a new stability run, plus a second production batch. The direct cost is real, but the schedule cost is usually larger. Ask whether a stability study is included for your formula.
