HPMC vs Gelatin Capsules: The Vegan Shift in Supplement Manufacturing
Hard capsules come in two shells: gelatin, animal-derived, and HPMC, plant-derived. The choice affects your vegan claim, your stability profile, your cost and, in some markets, your consumer acceptance. It is also one of the easiest formulation decisions to get right early and expensive to change late.

What Each Shell Is
- What is a gelatin capsule shell?
Gelatin is animal-derived, usually bovine or porcine. It has a long history, is well understood by regulators, and generally offers good stability at lower cost. It cannot be labelled vegan or vegetarian. - What is an HPMC capsule shell?
HPMC — hydroxypropyl methylcellulose — is plant-derived and therefore suitable for vegan, vegetarian and halal or kosher positioning where the gelatin source is a concern. It is the standard choice for plant-based brands. - Which is more stable?
The answer depends on the fill. Gelatin has traditionally had an edge in low-humidity conditions, while HPMC performs better with hygroscopic fills and in dry environments. Neither is universally better — the fill determines the answer. - Is one more expensive?
HPMC shells typically carry a higher unit cost than gelatin. For a mass-market product the difference may be small per bottle; for a premium vegan product it is usually absorbed by the price positioning.
Claims and Market Requirements
- Do I need HPMC to make a vegan claim?
Yes. A gelatin capsule cannot support a vegan or vegetarian claim. If vegan sits at the centre of your positioning, HPMC or another plant shell is required, not optional. - Are there markets where gelatin is a problem?
In some markets and consumer segments the animal source of gelatin raises religious or dietary concerns. Where halal or kosher certification matters, the gelatin source has to be verified — or avoided entirely with HPMC. - Does the shell affect my micro testing?
Not the testing itself, but it can affect the stability and moisture profile of the finished product, which is why the shell choice should be part of the stability study rather than an afterthought.
Making the Decision
- What should I ask before choosing?
Ask which shell the factory runs most often, whether they can sample both with your fill, and what their stability data says for your specific active. A supplier that only handles one shell will frame that one as the default. - Can I switch shells after launch?
Technically yes, but it is a reformulation. The stability data, the artwork if the claim changes, and often the batch record all change. Decide before the first production run, not after. - What about softgels?
Softgels have a different shell chemistry and a different vegan story — a gelatin softgel is harder to make plant-based than a hard capsule, and many vegan softgel alternatives are technically a different product. Treat the softgel question separately.
